Wardrobe internal layout: planning the inside properly.

A wardrobe is usually specified as a width and a finish, and the interior is left to a standard drawing — one long rail, two shelves, a loft. That default wastes a large share of the volume you paid for. Here is how to plan it deliberately.

Most wardrobes in Hyderabad apartments are specified as a width and a finish, and the inside is left to a standard drawing: a long hanging rail, two shelves, a loft. That default wastes a substantial share of the volume you paid for. This page is about planning the interior deliberately — what goes where, at what dimension, and which organisers earn their price. For the per-sq-ft rates, see the wardrobe cost guide.

1. Start from what goes in, not from the width

The single most useful hour you can spend before a wardrobe is manufactured is counting what it has to hold. Not estimating — counting. Sarees, formal shirts, trousers, folded knitwear, bags, suitcases, bedding. The reason is arithmetic: a long-hang section and a double-hang section of identical width hold very different quantities, and once the carcass is built the ratio between them cannot be changed without new panels.

A useful rule for Hyderabad homes specifically: saree storage is the variable that most often breaks a standard layout. Sarees are usually stored folded on shelves or in dedicated pull-outs rather than hung, and a household with a significant saree collection needs shelf volume where a default drawing gives hanging rail. Decide this before the cutting list, not after.

2. The three vertical zones, and their real dimensions

Every wardrobe divides into three bands, and each has a dimension that comes from the human body rather than from the board size.

Vertical zones in a standard-height wardrobe
ZoneTypical height bandWhat belongs there, and why
Loft (above)Above ~2,000mmSuitcases, bedding, seasonal quilts. Anything you touch once or twice a year. It needs a step to reach, so nothing in daily use should live here.
Prime zone (middle)≈ 700–2,000mmEverything used daily: hanging garments, the top drawers, folded shirts. This is the band your hands reach without bending or stretching, and it should be planned first.
Base (below)Below ~700mmShoes, heavy or bulky items, deep drawers. Weight belongs low. Anything here requires bending, so nothing you need in a hurry should be stored at this level.

The planning error this table exists to prevent is spending the prime zone on shelving that ends up holding rarely used items, while daily clothes sit in the base zone where you have to crouch for them. Assign the middle band to daily use first, then distribute the rest.

3. Hanging: the clearances that decide the layout

Hanging sections come in two forms, and choosing between them per bay rather than for the whole wardrobe is what makes an interior efficient.

Hanging section clearances
SectionVertical clearance neededSuits
Long hang≈ 1,600–1,800mmFull-length garments: sarees hung rather than folded, long dresses, overcoats, kurtas. Consumes the full prime zone in that bay.
Double hang≈ 950–1,050mm per tierShirts, folded trousers, blouses, children's clothing. Two rails in the same height as one long-hang section, so it holds roughly twice as much per foot of width.
Rail depth≈ 22–24in clearA standard hanger is 17–18in across the shoulders. Below about 22in of clear internal depth, garments press against the shutter and crease.

Most bedrooms need far less long hang than the default drawing provides. A common and effective split for a couple's wardrobe is one long-hang bay and the rest double-hung, which typically increases hanging capacity by half without adding a millimetre of width.

4. Drawers versus shelves: the ratio most wardrobes get wrong

Shelves are cheap and drawers are not, so default layouts are shelf-heavy. The problem is that a deep shelf is only usable at its front edge — anything pushed to the back of a 24-inch shelf is invisible and effectively lost, which is how wardrobes end up with a stratum of unworn clothing at the back of every shelf.

  • Keep shelves shallow in use. A shelf works well for stacks you lift as a unit — folded towels, bedding, sarees in a pile. It works badly for anything you need to select from.
  • Buy drawers for small, selectable items. Anything you pick one of — undergarments, socks, accessories, jewellery — belongs in a drawer, because a drawer presents its entire contents at once and a shelf does not.
  • Put drawers in the prime zone, not the base. Drawers in the lowest band require you to crouch and look down into them, which negates most of the advantage.
  • Depth matters more than count. Two deep drawers are usually more useful than four shallow ones for clothing; the reverse is true for accessories.

5. The loft: what it is for and what it can carry

Nearly every Hyderabad wardrobe includes a loft, and it is the most misused part of the unit. Three points decide whether it works.

  • It is annual-access storage. Suitcases, winter bedding, festival items. If something goes up there that you need monthly, the layout below has failed.
  • The base must be built for the load. A loft holding two full suitcases is carrying real weight over a long unsupported span. The base thickness and any mid-span support belong in the BOQ, not in the carpenter's judgement on the day.
  • Depth should match the wardrobe below. A loft shallower than the carcass creates a ledge that collects dust; a loft deeper than the carcass is unreachable at the back.

Where the wardrobe uses a top-hung sliding system, the loft base doubles as the structural member carrying the shutters — see the sliding wardrobe guide for what that requires.

6. Bay planning, and how the door type constrains it

The interior cannot be planned independently of the shutters, and this is the connection most often missed.

On a hinged wardrobe every bay can be opened at once, so full-width internal units work: a long shoe rack, a wide pull-out, a drawer bank spanning two bays. On a sliding wardrobe only half the opening is ever accessible, so every internal unit must sit wholly within a single bay or it cannot be extracted. Planning a full-width pull-out into a sliding wardrobe is a mistake that is only discovered at handover, and by then the carcass is built.

7. Organisers worth paying for — and the ones that are not

Accessory lists are where wardrobe budgets inflate quietly. The distinction that matters is whether the item solves a storage problem you actually have.

Internal organisers, honestly assessed
OrganiserVerdict
Soft-close drawersWorth it. The most-used moving part in the wardrobe, and the difference in feel between a damped and an undamped drawer is noticeable every day for a decade.
Pull-out trouser rackWorth it if you own enough trousers to fill it. It genuinely stores more per foot than folding, and keeps creases out. Half-empty, it is wasted volume.
Wardrobe lift (pull-down rod)Situational. Genuinely useful only where ceiling height puts a hanging section out of reach. In a standard-height flat it is usually solving a problem created by a poor zone layout.
Pull-out shoe rackUsually better outside the wardrobe. Shoes bring in dust and odour, and the same money spent on a dedicated shoe unit near the entrance serves the household better.
Internal locker or safe drawerWorth it, and it should be planned into the carcass rather than added later — a retrofitted safe is both less secure and more obvious.
LED profile light with door sensorWorth it in a deep or dark wardrobe, and close to pointless in a well-lit bedroom with shallow bays. Judge by whether you currently need the room light on to find things.
Pull-out dressing mirrorSituational. Excellent where wall space is genuinely unavailable; otherwise a wall or shutter-mounted mirror costs less and is more usable.

8. What Hyderabad does to a wardrobe interior

Dust reaches the inside

In the construction corridors, fine dust penetrates closed wardrobes through shutter gaps over a season. The mitigations are specification decisions: tight shutter tolerances, and choosing closed drawers over open shelving for anything you want to stay clean. Open-shelf wardrobe designs photograph well and are the wrong choice in a dusty corridor.

Monsoon humidity works on the back panel

The failure is fungus on the back panel and on the garments against it, and it happens where the wardrobe backs onto an external or bathroom-adjacent wall. The fix is a 15 to 20mm spacer gap between the carcass back and the wall, so air can move behind the unit. It costs almost nothing and is routinely omitted.

Hard water reaches internal mirrors

Where a dressing mirror sits inside the wardrobe, cleaning it with hard bore water leaves mineral deposits that etch permanently. Filtered or RO water, as with any glass surface in the city.

9. Two worked layouts

Bay-by-bay layouts that work
WardrobeLayout
Couple's master, 8 ft run, hingedBay 1 long hang (sarees, long garments) with a drawer bank beneath. Bays 2 and 3 double hang, upper rail for shirts and lower for trousers. Full-width loft above for suitcases and bedding. Two soft-close drawers in the prime zone for accessories, deep drawers at base for folded knitwear.
Child's room, 6 ft run, hingedDouble hang throughout at a lowered rail height the child can reach, so the wardrobe is usable independently. Shelving above rather than a full loft, since the top band will be reorganised as the child grows. Deep base drawers for toys and bulk. Avoid fixed internal partitions — this interior will need to change twice.

10. What to put in the BOQ

  • Hanging sections stated per bay as long hang or double hang, with the rail heights given.
  • Drawer count, position and box depth per bay — not "drawers as required".
  • Internal clear depth stated separately from external depth, so the 22–24in hanging clearance is on paper.
  • Loft base thickness and any mid-span support, with the intended load named.
  • The 15–20mm wall spacer on damp-prone walls, stated as a line rather than assumed.
  • Internal laminate specified — the faces you will look at daily for a decade.
  • Every organiser named by brand and series, since each carries its own manufacturer warranty.

What the warranty actually covers

A cost figure is only half the question; the other half is what happens after handover. AlcorOne's warranty on interior work in Hyderabad runs in three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times — a single headline figure would misrepresent all three.

AlcorOne warranty tiers, running from the date of handover
TierTermWhat it covers
Carcass — plywood10 yearsDelamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board of modular kitchens, wardrobes and fixed joinery built by AlcorOne. Conditional on the board grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed — BWP to IS 710 in wet zones, BWR to IS 303 above splash lines. This tier covers the board itself and nothing else.
Installation and workmanship1 yearDefects attributable to how the work was built and fitted — alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar.
Hardware, fittings and appliancesManufacturer's own termHinges, channels, drawer systems, electricals, sanitaryware and appliances carry the vendor's own warranty — Hettich, Blum, Häfele and Ebco each publish their own mechanism terms. AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim.

Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes. The full terms are on the Terms of Service page.

Read a headline warranty number in this category the same way. A ten-year figure quoted on its own is almost always the carcass tier alone, with installation sitting at one to two years beneath it. Ask any contractor which of those years are theirs and which are the brands'.

Frequently asked questions.

How should I divide a wardrobe between hanging and shelves?

Start by counting what has to go in rather than estimating, because the ratio is fixed once the carcass is built. Most bedrooms need far less long hang than a default drawing gives: one long-hang bay for sarees and full-length garments, with the remaining bays double-hung, typically increases hanging capacity by about half without adding any width. In Hyderabad specifically, a household with a large saree collection usually needs shelf or pull-out volume where the standard drawing puts a hanging rail.

What are the correct hanging heights in a wardrobe?

A long-hang section needs roughly 1,600 to 1,800mm of vertical clearance for sarees, long dresses and kurtas. A double-hang section needs about 950 to 1,050mm per tier, which fits two rails into the same height as one long-hang section. Both need 22 to 24 inches of clear internal depth, because a standard hanger is 17 to 18 inches across the shoulders and anything shallower presses garments against the shutter.

Are drawers worth the extra cost over shelves?

For anything you select one item from, yes. A deep shelf is only usable at its front edge — whatever is pushed to the back of a 24-inch shelf is invisible and effectively lost, which is how wardrobes accumulate a layer of unworn clothing at the back of every shelf. A drawer presents its whole contents at once. Shelves remain the right answer for stacks you lift as a unit, like folded bedding or a pile of sarees.

Which wardrobe organisers are actually worth buying?

Soft-close drawers and a planned-in internal locker are worth it in most wardrobes. A pull-out trouser rack is worth it only if you own enough trousers to fill it. A pull-down wardrobe lift is usually solving a problem created by a poor zone layout rather than a real reach problem. A pull-out shoe rack is generally better replaced by a dedicated shoe unit near the entrance, since shoes bring dust and odour into the wardrobe.

Does the door type change the internal layout?

Yes, and this is the connection most often missed. On a hinged wardrobe every bay opens at once, so full-width internal units work. On a sliding wardrobe only half the opening is ever accessible, so every drawer, pull-out and rack must sit wholly within a single bay or it cannot be extracted. A full-width pull-out planned into a sliding wardrobe is usually discovered at handover, when the carcass is already built.

How do I stop fungus forming inside a wardrobe in the monsoon?

Specify a 15 to 20mm spacer gap between the carcass back and the wall wherever the wardrobe backs onto an external or bathroom-adjacent wall, so air can move behind the unit. It costs almost nothing and is routinely left out. It is the single most effective measure against fungus on the back panel and on the garments pressed against it.

What should the BOQ say about the wardrobe interior?

Hanging sections stated per bay as long hang or double hang with rail heights; drawer count, position and box depth per bay rather than "drawers as required"; internal clear depth stated separately from external depth; loft base thickness with the intended load named; the wall spacer as its own line; the internal laminate specified; and every organiser named by brand and series, since each carries its own manufacturer warranty.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Final thoughts

The inside of a wardrobe is the part you interact with every single day, and it is the part most often left to a default drawing. None of the decisions above cost much — the ratio of long hang to double hang, where the drawers sit, whether the back is spaced off a damp wall — but all of them are fixed the moment the cutting list is released. An hour spent counting what has to go in, before anything is manufactured, is the highest-return hour in the whole project.
