Sliding wardrobe cost in Hyderabad: what the premium actually buys.
Sliding wardrobes run 20% to 30% above hinged. The money is in the track system, the extra carcass depth and the installation tolerance — not in the doors. Here is how to specify one that still runs smoothly in year eight.
A sliding wardrobe is not a hinged wardrobe with different doors. It is a different product with a different failure mode, and almost everything that goes wrong with one in a Hyderabad apartment traces back to a decision made in the quotation — the track series, the shutter weight, or the floor it was installed on. This guide covers the mechanism rather than the price per square foot; for that, the wardrobe cost guide carries the full per-sq-ft tiers.
1. What you are actually paying the premium for
Sliding wardrobes run roughly 20% to 30% above the equivalent hinged unit. Homeowners usually assume the extra money is in the doors. It is not. The shutters are comparable — the same board, the same laminate, often the same supplier. The premium sits in four places, and only one of them is visible.
- The track and roller kit. A branded top-hung system for a two-shutter wardrobe is a meaningful line item on its own, and it is priced on shutter weight rather than wardrobe size.
- The extra carcass depth. The track mechanism occupies 3 to 4 inches. To keep a usable 24-inch internal hanging clearance the outer frame has to grow to 26 to 28 inches, so you are buying more board for the same storage.
- The shutter frame. Sliding shutters are usually built on an aluminium profile, because a bare board panel of that size flexes over time and eventually fouls the track.
- Installation tolerance. A hinged door 3mm out is corrected at the hinge in a minute. A sliding shutter 3mm out binds, and correcting it means shimming the track along its whole length.
The useful question at quotation stage is not "how much more is sliding?" but "which track series, and rated to what shutter weight?" A quotation that says "premium sliding hardware" has named no warrantor and no load rating.
2. Top-hung versus bottom-rolling: the choice that decides everything
Every sliding wardrobe uses one of two systems, and the two behave very differently over a decade. This is the single most consequential line on the specification.
| Top-hung (suspended) | Bottom-rolling (floor-borne) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the weight sits | The shutter hangs from a top track. The bottom channel only guides it. | The shutter rests on floor-level rollers. The top channel only guides it. |
| Floor tolerance | Forgiving. A slightly out-of-level floor does not bind the shutter, because the load is carried above. | Unforgiving. Any dip or slope in the floor shows up immediately as a shutter that rolls open on its own or sticks. |
| Structural requirement above | The top track must fix to something structural — the wardrobe's own top rail or the loft base — and that member has to be built to carry the shutter weight. | None. Works where the wardrobe has no rigid top member. |
| Dust behaviour | Better. The load-bearing track is above, out of the settling path. Debris in the lower guide is cosmetic rather than mechanical. | Worse. Dust and grit collect in the floor channel, which is precisely where the load-bearing rollers run. |
| Feel over time | Stays smoother for longer; roller wear is even because the load is constant. | Degrades faster in a dusty environment unless the channel is cleaned regularly. |
| Relative cost | Higher — the track carries the load, so it is a heavier engineered component. | Lower. This is the system behind most budget sliding quotations. |
For a Hyderabad apartment the recommendation is unambiguous: specify top-hung. The city's dust load is the deciding factor, not the price difference. A bottom-rolling system in a flat facing an active construction corridor — which describes much of Kokapet, Tellapur, Narsingi and the Financial District through this decade — collects grit in the load-bearing channel continuously, and the owner notices it as a shutter that has become heavy to move within about eighteen months.
3. What sliding costs you in access
This is the trade-off least often stated at quotation stage, and the one homeowners are most irritated by afterwards.
You can only ever open half the wardrobe at once. On a two-shutter sliding wardrobe one shutter parks in front of the other, so exactly half the opening is accessible at any moment. On a three-shutter run you gain a little — roughly two-thirds is reachable in sequence — but you never see the whole interior at once the way you do with hinged doors thrown open.
The practical consequences are worth planning around rather than discovering:
- Nothing full-width can live inside. A wide pull-out drawer or a long shoe rack spanning the full carcass cannot be extracted, because half the opening is always blocked. Internal units must be planned per bay, not per wardrobe.
- Seasonal storage becomes awkward. Anything you reach for rarely should sit in a bay you can expose easily, not behind the shutter that is usually parked.
- Full-length mirrors need thought. A mirror on a sliding shutter is genuinely convenient, but it is always in front of one of the two bays — you dress in front of the half you cannot open.
4. The depth arithmetic nobody runs before signing
A hinged wardrobe at 24 inches deep gives 24 inches of usable interior, because the shutter closes flush against the carcass face. A sliding wardrobe does not.
| Element | Depth consumed | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging clearance needed | ≈ 22–24 in | A standard hanger is about 17 to 18 in across the shoulders; below roughly 22 in of clear internal depth, garments press against the shutter. |
| Track and shutter overlap | 3–4 in | Two shutters must pass each other, so the mechanism needs the depth of both panels plus running clearance. |
| Resulting external depth | 26–28 in | This is what the wardrobe actually projects into the bedroom — 2 to 4 in more than the hinged equivalent, for identical storage. |
In a compact Hyderabad master bedroom this is not academic. Four extra inches across a 10-foot wardrobe run is roughly 3.3 sq ft of floor area removed from the room, and where the bed already sits close to the wardrobe it is the difference between a comfortable walking gap and a squeeze. Measure the residual gap between the bed and the closed shutter face before choosing sliding; if it falls below about 30 inches, hinged is the better answer regardless of preference.
5. Shutter options, and what each one does over a decade
| Shutter type | Behaviour over 8–10 years | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate on HDHMR | The most predictable. Resists scratching better than acrylic, tolerates the humidity swing between monsoon and a 43°C May, and wipes clean without special products. | The default for most bedrooms, and the best value per year of service. |
| Lacquered glass | Visually the strongest and completely stable — glass does not warp, fade or absorb moisture. Heavy, so the track series must be rated for it. Shows every fingerprint. | Master bedrooms where appearance is the priority and the budget carries a top-hung system rated for the weight. |
| Mirror | Convenient, and makes a small room read larger. The vulnerability is the backing: mirror on a bathroom-adjacent wall in a humid flat can develop black edge spotting where moisture reaches the silvering. | One shutter of a run, on the driest wall — rarely the right choice for every shutter. |
| Profile / framed panel | An aluminium frame with an infill panel. Structurally the most stable large shutter, and the frame conceals minor panel movement. | Wide shutters, above about 3 ft per panel, where a plain board would flex. |
| Acrylic | High-gloss and striking when new. Scratches more visibly than laminate and shows fingerprints — both worse on a surface you push to open every day. | Rarely the right call on a sliding shutter specifically, because you touch the face constantly. |
6. What Hyderabad specifically does to a sliding wardrobe
Dust is the primary enemy, not humidity
Hyderabad's construction dust is fine, abrasive and relentless in the growth corridors. In a sliding wardrobe it does not merely look untidy — it acts as a grinding compound between roller and track. This is the strongest argument for a top-hung system, and it is also why the lower guide should be specified as an open or removable profile rather than a deep closed channel that traps grit where nobody can reach it.
Hard water shows on glass and mirror shutters
Much of the city runs hard bore water. On a mirrored or lacquered-glass shutter, cleaning with that water leaves mineral deposits that etch into a permanent haze if they are left. The fix is trivial and almost never mentioned at handover: clean glass shutters with filtered or RO water, not tap water.
Summer heat works on the adhesive line
A closed bedroom in a west-facing Hyderabad flat can push past 40°C through May. The stress lands on the bond between the shutter panel and its aluminium frame, and on the edge banding. Machine-applied banding tolerates this; hand-applied contact-adhesive banding is where the failures start.
7. Site conditions that break a sliding install
Most sliding wardrobe complaints trace to conditions that were visible before manufacturing began, if anyone checked.
- An out-of-level floor. Take levels across the full run before the wardrobe is manufactured. On a bottom-rolling system a slope of even a few millimetres over 8 feet produces a shutter that drifts open on its own. Top-hung systems tolerate this, which is another reason to prefer them.
- A top rail with nothing to hang from. Top-hung shutters transfer their full weight into the wardrobe's top member. Where the wardrobe sits under a loft, that loft base must be built to carry it; where there is no loft, the top rail has to be engineered rather than simply a board spanning the opening.
- A wall out of plumb. Older Hyderabad blocks frequently have walls out of plumb over full wardrobe height. The carcass must be shimmed square and the resulting gap closed with a scribe filler, because a shutter running in a non-square opening will bind at one end of its travel.
- Skirting not accounted for. If the wardrobe sits over existing skirting the carcass stands proud of the wall and every subsequent dimension shifts. Decide before manufacture whether the skirting is cut back or the carcass is packed out.
8. What to put in the BOQ
These are the lines that make a sliding wardrobe quotation enforceable. Each converts a marketing phrase into something with a warrantor and a number.
| Instead of | Specify |
|---|---|
| "Premium sliding hardware" | The track brand and series by name, stated as top-hung, with the shutter weight it is rated to carry — a named Hettich, Häfele or Ebco sliding series rather than a category. |
| "Sliding wardrobe, 8 x 7 ft" | External depth stated separately from internal hanging clearance, so the 26–28 in versus 24 in distinction is on paper before you sign. |
| "Soft close" | Soft-close dampers on both shutters, named by series. Single-side damping is common in cheaper quotations and is obvious in daily use. |
| "Laminate finish" | Laminate thickness and brand on the outer face, and confirmation of what the inner face of the shutter carries. |
| "Edge banding" | Machine-applied banding with the thickness stated. Hand-applied contact-adhesive banding is the most common long-term failure on any shutter. |
| "Mirror shutter" | The mirror backing type, and whether a safety backing film is applied — a shutter you slide daily is a shutter that will eventually be knocked. |
9. Handover checks specific to sliding
The general snagging checklist covers joinery. These are the checks that apply only to a sliding mechanism, and every one of them is easier to get fixed before final payment than after.
| Check | What good looks like | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Travel under one finger | Each shutter moves through its full travel under light finger pressure, with no grinding and no point where it becomes heavy. | [ ] |
| Soft-close engagement | The damper catches at both ends of travel on every shutter and pulls in without slamming or bouncing back. | [ ] |
| Shutter gap consistency | The vertical gap where shutters meet is even top to bottom. A tapering gap means the wardrobe is not square. | [ ] |
| No self-drift | Released at mid-travel, the shutter stays where it is. Drift means the track or the floor is out of level. | [ ] |
| Anti-jump provision | On a top-hung system the shutter cannot be lifted clear of the track in normal use — a genuine safety point in a home with children. | [ ] |
| Lower guide accessible | The floor channel can be cleaned without dismantling anything. In Hyderabad this determines how the wardrobe behaves in year three. | [ ] |
| Internal access per bay | Every drawer and pull-out can be fully extracted with only one shutter open, since that is the only state the wardrobe will ever be in. | [ ] |
10. When hinged is simply the better answer
Sliding is not the upgrade it is usually sold as. It is a trade: you buy back the door swing space and pay for it in depth, access and mechanism. Choose hinged when any of the following is true.
- The gap between the wardrobe face and the bed is already under about 30 inches — the extra 2 to 4 inches of sliding depth will cost you more than the swing clearance saves.
- The wardrobe run is under about 6 feet. Below that width the shutters become narrow and the half-access penalty is proportionally worse.
- You want full-width internal pull-outs, a full-width shoe unit, or to see the entire interior at once.
- The budget is fixed and tight. The same money in a hinged wardrobe buys a better carcass grade and better hinges — which is where longevity actually comes from.
Where the swing space genuinely does not exist — a wardrobe facing a bed in a compact second bedroom, or one opening into a walkway — sliding earns its premium outright. That is the case it was designed for.

What the warranty actually covers
A cost figure is only half the question; the other half is what happens after handover. AlcorOne's warranty on interior work in Hyderabad runs in three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times — a single headline figure would misrepresent all three.
| Tier | Term | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass — plywood | 10 years | Delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board of modular kitchens, wardrobes and fixed joinery built by AlcorOne. Conditional on the board grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed — BWP to IS 710 in wet zones, BWR to IS 303 above splash lines. This tier covers the board itself and nothing else. |
| Installation and workmanship | 1 year | Defects attributable to how the work was built and fitted — alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. |
| Hardware, fittings and appliances | Manufacturer's own term | Hinges, channels, drawer systems, electricals, sanitaryware and appliances carry the vendor's own warranty — Hettich, Blum, Häfele and Ebco each publish their own mechanism terms. AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. |
Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes. The full terms are on the Terms of Service page.
Read a headline warranty number in this category the same way. A ten-year figure quoted on its own is almost always the carcass tier alone, with installation sitting at one to two years beneath it. Ask any contractor which of those years are theirs and which are the brands'.
Frequently asked questions.
Why do sliding wardrobes cost 20 to 30 percent more than hinged?
Not because of the doors. The premium sits in four places: the track and roller kit, which is priced on shutter weight rather than wardrobe size; the extra carcass depth, since the mechanism takes 3 to 4 inches and the frame has to grow to 26 to 28 inches to keep a usable 24-inch interior; the aluminium shutter frame that stops a large panel flexing into the track; and the tighter installation tolerance, because a sliding shutter 3mm out binds where a hinged door is simply adjusted at the hinge.
Should I choose top-hung or bottom-rolling tracks in Hyderabad?
Top-hung, in almost every case. On a bottom-rolling system the load-bearing rollers run in a floor channel, which is exactly where Hyderabad's construction dust settles, so the shutter becomes heavy to move within a couple of years. Top-hung carries the weight from above, tolerates a floor that is slightly out of level, and keeps the load path out of the settling path. It costs more because the track is a heavier engineered component.
How much bedroom depth does a sliding wardrobe take?
Between 26 and 28 inches externally, against 24 inches for a hinged wardrobe with the same internal storage. The track mechanism needs 3 to 4 inches for the two shutters to pass each other, and that has to sit outside the hanging clearance. Across a 10-foot run the extra depth removes roughly 3.3 sq ft of bedroom floor.
Can I have full-width drawers inside a sliding wardrobe?
No. One shutter always parks in front of the other, so only half the opening is ever accessible and a full-width pull-out cannot be extracted. Internal drawers, shoe racks and pull-outs have to be planned per bay, so each one can be fully opened with a single shutter moved aside.
Are mirrored sliding shutters a problem in Hyderabad?
They work, with two cautions. Hard bore water leaves mineral deposits that etch into a permanent haze, so glass and mirror shutters should be cleaned with filtered or RO water rather than tap water. And a mirror on a wall shared with a bathroom can develop black edge spotting where moisture reaches the silvering, so put mirrored shutters on the driest wall in the room.
When is a hinged wardrobe the better choice?
When the gap between the wardrobe face and the bed is already under about 30 inches, since the extra sliding depth costs more than the swing clearance saves; when the wardrobe run is under about 6 feet, because the shutters become narrow and the half-access penalty gets proportionally worse; when you want full-width internal units or to see the whole interior at once; and when the budget is tight, because the same money in a hinged wardrobe buys a better carcass grade and better hinges.
What should the BOQ say about sliding hardware?
The track brand and series by name, stated as top-hung, with the shutter weight it is rated to carry. "Premium sliding hardware" names no warrantor and no load rating, and a pass-through manufacturer warranty is only as enforceable as the specification it attaches to. Also state soft-close dampers on both shutters by series, since single-side damping is common in cheaper quotations and is obvious in daily use.
What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?
Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.
Final thoughts
A sliding wardrobe is bought for one reason — there is no room for a door to swing — and it should be specified for one reason: that it still slides in a decade. In Hyderabad that means a top-hung track rated to the actual shutter weight, a lower guide you can clean, a floor level confirmed before manufacture, and machine-applied edge banding. Every one of those is a line in the BOQ rather than a conversation on site, and none of them is what the quotation's headline number is describing.
