Using Commercial MR Plywood in Coastal Kitchens
If there is one fatal flaw in Vizag interior design, it is this: building a kitchen carcass using Commercial MR (Moisture Resistant) plywood. Despite the name, this material is entirely unsuitable for the aggressive humidity and wet cooking conditions of a coastal Indian kitchen.
The Deception of "Moisture Resistant"
MR (Moisture Resistant) plywood is an IS 303 grade board. It is manufactured using urea-formaldehyde resin. The word "resistant" is highly misleading to the average homeowner.
MR plywood can resist occasional, light dampness (like wiping it with a damp cloth). It cannot withstand continuous high humidity, nor can it survive direct exposure to water. In a dry city like Hyderabad, MR ply is acceptable for dry areas. In Visakhapatnam, where the ambient humidity is constantly high, MR plywood is a sponge.
How MR Plywood Fails in Vizag
When you build a kitchen sink cabinet or lower base cabinets with MR plywood in Vizag, the timeline of destruction is predictable:
- Absorption: The high coastal humidity, combined with steam from cooking and drips from the sink, permeates the edges of the plywood.
- Resin Breakdown: The urea-based glue holding the wood veneers together begins to dissolve upon prolonged contact with moisture.
- Delamination & Swelling: The layers of wood separate (delamination). The board swells to double its thickness. The decorative laminate on the outside bubbles and peels off.
- Structural Failure: The swollen, soft wood can no longer hold the screws for your heavy cabinet hinges. The doors sag and eventually fall off.
The Only Solution: BWP Marine Plywood
For coastal kitchens, you must mandate IS 710 BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Marine Plywood.
BWP plywood uses undiluted phenol-formaldehyde resin. This resin is chemically waterproof. The board can physically be submerged in boiling water for 72 hours without the layers separating. This makes it structurally invincible against Vizag's humidity and inevitable kitchen spills.

Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

My carpenter says he will apply a waterproof coating over the MR plywood. Is that enough?
No. Paint or superficial sealants will eventually scratch or wear thin. Once a single drop of water bypasses the coating, the MR plywood will absorb it and swell, cracking the coating from the inside out. The waterproofing must be in the glue (BWP).
Can I use MR plywood for my bedroom wardrobes in Vizag?
Yes. Bedrooms are generally dry zones. High-quality MR plywood is sufficient for wardrobes, provided the room has decent ventilation and the wardrobe does not share a wall with a leaky bathroom.
How can I visually verify if the plywood is BWP or MR?
True BWP marine plywood usually has a dark brown or reddish core due to the phenolic resin used. MR plywood typically has a lighter, blonde wood color. Always ask to see the manufacturer's IS 710 certification stamp.

One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.
