Modular Kitchen Interior Guide: Vizag Edition
A kitchen in Visakhapatnam faces two major challenges: the heavy, wet nature of traditional Indian cooking, and the relentless humidity of the coastal climate. Designing a modular kitchen here isn't just about aesthetics; it is about coastal engineering.
The Vizag Kitchen Mandate
Before you choose a color or a countertop, you must secure the structural integrity of your kitchen. The coastal air in Vizag will rapidly degrade standard materials.
1. 100% BWP Marine Plywood Core
Never accept a quote for a Vizag kitchen built with Commercial MR plywood or MDF. You must insist on IS 710 BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Marine Plywood for the entire base structure (carcass). The phenolic resins in BWP plywood make it immune to the ambient coastal humidity and accidental plumbing leaks.
2. SS 304 Hardware
Salty air destroys standard mild steel hinges. Specify Stainless Steel 304 (SS 304) for all hinges, tandem drawers, and wire baskets. This is a non-negotiable upgrade for any apartment near Beach Road, Rushikonda, or MVP Colony.
Choosing the Right Layout
Your layout depends entirely on your floor plan and cooking habits:
- L-Shaped: The most common layout in standard 2BHK and 3BHK apartments. It maximizes the "kitchen triangle" (the path between the stove, sink, and fridge).
- Parallel (Galley): Highly efficient for heavy cooking. Often found in older Vizag apartments or independent houses where the kitchen is a long, enclosed room.
- Open Kitchen with Island: Popular in new luxury villas in Madhurawada and Kapuluppada. Requires a powerful, high-suction chimney to prevent cooking odors from permeating the living room.
Finishes for High Humidity
The exterior finish (shutter) must be sealed perfectly. We mandate factory machine edge-banding using PUR glue. Manual edge-banding will peel in Vizag's humidity.
For the finish material, High-Pressure Laminate is the most durable against scratches and turmeric stains. If you want a modern, reflective look, Acrylic is excellent, provided it is factory-pressed to prevent delamination.
Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood
Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:
| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP (Marine Ply) | IS 710 | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| BWR Plywood | IS 303 | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| Commercial / MR | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| HDHMR | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| MDF / Particle Board | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |
Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

What the warranty actually covers
Almost every kitchen quotation in Vizag says "warranty included," and very few say who is giving it. A modular kitchen is four or five manufacturers' products assembled by a contractor, and the warranty is structured the same way. AlcorOne states its cover in three tiers rather than one number, because the tiers cover different things and expire at different times.
| Tier | Term | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass — plywood | 10 years | Delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board of modular kitchens, wardrobes and fixed joinery built by AlcorOne. Conditional on the board grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed — BWP to IS 710 in wet zones, BWR to IS 303 above splash lines. This tier covers the board itself and nothing else. |
| Installation and workmanship | 1 year | Defects attributable to how the work was built and fitted — alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. |
| Hardware, fittings and appliances | Manufacturer's own term | Hinges, channels, drawer systems, electricals, sanitaryware and appliances carry the vendor's own warranty — Hettich, Blum, Häfele and Ebco each publish their own mechanism terms. AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. |
Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes. The full terms are on the Terms of Service page.
Read a headline warranty number in this category the same way. A ten-year figure quoted on its own is almost always the carcass tier alone, with installation sitting at one to two years beneath it. Ask any contractor which of those years are theirs and which are the brands'.
Frequently asked questions.
What is the best countertop for a Vizag kitchen?
Black Granite remains the most durable choice for heavy Indian cooking, as it requires zero maintenance and hides stains. Engineered Quartz is beautiful and non-porous but requires you to use trivets for hot pans.
How do I prevent cockroaches in a modular kitchen?
Regular pest control is key. However, design helps. We ensure tight tolerances between cabinets and use skirting boards with rubber seals that touch the floor, preventing pests from nesting underneath the base cabinets.
Should I buy a chimney for a Vizag kitchen?
Yes, it is absolutely essential. A high-suction chimney (minimum 1200 m3/hr) removes sticky oil vapors before they can settle on your beautiful cabinets and mix with the coastal humidity.
What warranty does AlcorOne give on a modular kitchen?
Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.
Your kitchen is the heart of your home, but it is also a harsh environment of heat, water, and salt air. It requires precise engineering to survive.
AlcorOne builds kitchens that last. We use exclusively BWP Marine plywood and SS 304 hardware, ensuring your Vizag kitchen is as robust as it is beautiful.
