This is not carpenters versus machines. It is undocumented work versus documented work.

A skilled site carpenter can build things a factory cannot, and every one of our own projects has carpenters on it. But the traditional method has failures that survive even an excellent carpenter, because they come from what nobody wrote down rather than from anyone's hands. This page sets out the method honestly — how it works, what it genuinely does better, where it structurally fails, and what changes when the same work is done against a specification.

How the traditional method actually runs.

Six steps, more or less unchanged for decades. The defining feature is at the end: the design decisions are made continuously, on site, by the person cutting the board.

1 · Site visit and verbal brief

The carpenter measures the opening and you describe what you want, usually in conversation, sometimes against a rough sketch or a photograph on a phone. Very little of this is written down.

2 · A price, usually per running foot

Quoted against the description just agreed, either per running foot or as a lump sum for the unit. What board, what hardware and what internal fittings that price assumes is generally not stated.

3 · Material purchased, often by the carpenter

Board, laminate, hardware and adhesive bought against the budget, sometimes on a cash advance from you. Whichever brand and grade the supplier had that week is what arrives.

4 · Cut and assembled in your house

A table saw, a router and hand tools, on your floor. Cutting, edge banding and assembly all happen in the room the unit will stand in.

5 · Finished in place

Laminate, polish or paint applied after assembly, in the same space, with the dust and the drying time that implies.

6 · Hardware, alignment, handover

Hinges and channels fitted, shutters aligned, and the job is done when it looks done. There is rarely a written list of what was built or what it was built from.

What site carpentry genuinely does better.

These are not consolation prizes. On the right job each of these is a real advantage that a production process cannot match, and pretending otherwise would make the rest of this page untrustworthy.

It absorbs an imperfect building

Walls out of plumb, floors that fall, ceilings that vary across a room. Every piece is fitted to what is actually there instead of to a drawing that assumed square — and almost no building is square.

No minimum order, no tooling

One odd unit in an awkward corner is simply built. There is no setup cost to amortise and no minimum quantity to justify, which is exactly where factory economics stop working.

It can change mid-job

Move a shelf, deepen a cabinet, add a drawer after seeing it in place. On site this is often free. Against a production order it is a variation with a price and a lead time.

It repairs instead of replacing

A damaged shutter or a failed joint can be remade in situ. Modular systems frequently replace the module, which is more expensive and occasionally impossible once a range is discontinued.

Genuinely bespoke work

A curved reception desk, period matching, a single unusual piece. Where the work is not repetitive enough for a line to help, a good carpenter is the better answer and will produce a better result.

No lead time on small work

A small item can start tomorrow. Nothing has to be drawn, ordered, batched or shipped first.

Where it fails — and why it is not about skill.

Every failure below would still occur with an outstanding carpenter, because each one comes from something that was never written down rather than from something done badly. That distinction is the whole argument of this page.

These are documentation failures, not craftsmanship failures. That is why hiring a better carpenter does not fix them, and why the same carpenter working to a specification produces a checkable result. The right-hand column is what a written process substitutes in each case.

Quantity becomes auditable

A cut list and an itemised BOQ mean the total is arithmetic you can verify rather than a figure you accept. You can walk the site and match lines to work.

Material becomes verifiable

Grade named against each zone means the board behind the shutter was promised in a document you hold — the one thing you can never check by looking once it is closed.

Lifespan becomes a specification

Hardware by brand and series. A brand name spans a wide quality range; the series is where the money and the years actually are.

Workmanship becomes inspectable

Checkpoints at stages, before the next stage covers the last one. Inspecting only at handover means inspecting only what is still visible.

The date becomes enforceable

A sequenced programme with a stated start and end point, rather than a duration that expands quietly because nothing was scheduled against it.

And the warranty means something

A warranty can only attach to what was specified. This is the real reason process matters: without a specification, a warranty is a sentiment.

We use carpenters. That is the point.

Every project we deliver has carpenters on it. Site joinery, fitting, alignment and all genuinely bespoke work is done by hand, by skilled people, and the good ones are very good indeed. A page arguing that carpentry is the problem would be both wrong and dishonest coming from us.

The argument is about the document, not the tradesman. The same carpenter, working to a cut list, a specification with grade stated per zone, named hardware and quality checkpoints, produces something you can check — and something a warranty can attach to. Working to a verbal brief and a price per running foot, they produce something that might be excellent and that nobody can verify either way. The difference between a good outcome and a bad one is very rarely the person holding the tool.

And the honest limit on our own argument: if your job is a single wardrobe, a study table, a repair or one odd unit, and you are there to supervise it, hire a good local carpenter. The overhead of a full process would cost you more than it protects. We would tell you that rather than sell you a BOQ you do not need. Where process earns its keep is when the job is too large to check yourself, when units must match each other, when you are not on site, or when the sums involved mean you want the specification to be enforceable.

It makes quantity auditable, material verifiable, lifespan specified, workmanship inspectable and the date enforceable — and it is what lets a warranty mean anything. It does not make anyone better at carpentry; it makes the outcome independent of luck.

Do you use carpenters?

Constantly. Every project has them. They work to a cut list, grade per zone and named hardware, so what they build can be checked against something.

When should I hire a carpenter directly?

Small, self-contained work you can supervise — a wardrobe, a study table, a repair, one odd unit. The overhead of a full process would cost more than it protects, and we would say so.

Is carpentry cheaper?

Per running foot at quotation, usually. Over the life of the work, often not — the rate is quoted against a specification nobody wrote down, so it can be met with whatever fits the price. Put both on the same specification before comparing.
