Start by measuring volume, not area

The most common planning error in a small kitchen is thinking in square feet. Storage is a volume problem. A 50 sq ft kitchen with 10-foot ceilings has far more usable capacity than a 65 sq ft kitchen planned only up to 7 feet.

Hyderabad apartments typically have 10 to 11 feet of floor-to-slab height. A standard modular kitchen occupies the first 7 feet. That leaves 3 to 4 feet of prime, unused volume above the wall cabinets running the full length of every wall — usually 25 to 35 cubic feet of storage, available for about ₹18,000.

Ten ideas that genuinely work in a small kitchen

1. Drawers instead of shelved cabinets below the counter. A 600mm shelved cabinet forces you to kneel and reach into the dark, and the back third goes unused. The same width as three drawers gives full access to all of the volume. This single change is worth more than any other in a small kitchen, at about ₹3,000 extra per unit.

2. A tall unit, even if it costs you a base cabinet. A 450mm tall unit with six pull-out shelves holds more dry goods than three base cabinets while using a fraction of the floor. In a small kitchen this is the highest-value ₹38,000 you can spend.

3. Take wall cabinets to 750mm instead of 700mm. Fifty millimetres sounds trivial; across a 10-foot run it is an extra 4 cubic feet at nearly zero cost, because the shutter sheet is being cut anyway.

4. Use the loft, and make it accessible. Lofts get skipped because people assume they cannot reach them. Specify lift-up shutters rather than side-hinged doors, and store genuinely seasonal items there — festival vessels, the cooker you use twice a year.

5. Solve the corner properly. In a small L-shaped kitchen a blind corner is 4 to 6 cubic feet you paid for and cannot reach — a much bigger proportional loss than in a large kitchen. A ₹16,000 magic corner recovers it.

6. Pull the fridge out of the work triangle. A 600mm fridge inside a 50 sq ft kitchen consumes the room. If there is a dining-adjacent nook or a utility wall, move it there. The kitchen immediately gains a full base cabinet and a metre of walking space.

7. Handle-less shutters. Profile handles or push-to-open on base units remove the protruding hardware you catch your hip on in a narrow aisle, and the uninterrupted plane reads as a larger surface. Adds roughly ₹120 per sq ft. See the hardware guide.

8. Under-cabinet LED strips, not just a ceiling light. A single ceiling fixture puts your own shadow on the countertop. A 4W per metre warm strip under the wall cabinets lights the work surface directly. It costs ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 and does more for the perceived size of the room than any paint colour.

9. Light, low-contrast finishes above; darker below. Light wall cabinets recede visually, while a darker base grounds the room and hides the scuffs base cabinets inevitably collect. The split also saves money — see acrylic vs laminate.

10. A 300mm pull-out where nothing else fits. Leftover gaps of 250 to 350mm beside the fridge or at the end of a run take a bottle pull-out or tray unit. It is the difference between a filler panel and usable storage.

Ideas that photograph well and disappoint in use

• Open shelving instead of wall cabinets. In an Indian kitchen with regular tadka and deep-frying, open shelves accumulate a sticky oil film needing a wipe every few days. Beautiful in a magazine, tiring in Hyderabad.
• Glass shutters throughout. They require the inside of your cabinets to stay tidy permanently. One or two glass units for crockery is charming; a whole kitchen of them is a chore.
• Skipping the chimney to save space. Without extraction, oil deposits on every surface in a small room. The kitchen gets harder to clean and shutters degrade faster.
• Mirror or high-gloss backsplash. It shows every splash within an hour of cooking. Use a matte or satin tile in the splash zone and save gloss for the shutters.
• Corner sink. Frequently drawn to "save" counter space; it wastes the most useful corner and leaves no landing area on either side.

Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

Common Hidden Costs to Clarify Upfront

Most interior quotations exclude these items. Ask your contractor to address each one in writing before signing:

• Electrical modifications — extra points, conduit runs inside false ceilings, distribution board shifts: ₹40,000–80,000.
• Civil & wall changes — partition demolition, door-frame relocation, replastering: priced per running foot; budget ₹500–900/rft.
• Kitchen countertop slab — quartz or granite purchase + laying is almost always excluded from the kitchen quote: ₹50,000–1,20,000.
• Utility enclosure — weather-resistant BWP cabinet for the utility/service balcony: ₹18,000–35,000.
• GST — 18% on all materials and services. Confirm whether the quoted price is inclusive or exclusive.
• Transport & packing — factory-to-site delivery charges for large joinery panels: ₹8,000–20,000 depending on distance.
