What is a Laminate Finish?
Laminate (often referred to generically as Sunmica in India) is an artificial material made by pressing layers of paper and plastic resins together under high pressure. It is glued to a substrate (usually plywood or MDF) to form the visible surface of a cabinet door.
Laminates come in a massive variety of textures: matte, gloss, suede, wood-grain, and metallic. They are highly durable, resistant to heat, and incredibly hard to scratch.
What is an Acrylic Finish?
Acrylic is a non-toxic finish made from polymer fiber (similar to a highly durable plastic). It comes in sheets that are pasted onto a substrate (MDF or HDHMR board is preferred over plywood for Acrylic to prevent the wood grain from showing through the reflective surface).
Acrylic is famous for its ultra-glossy, mirror-like finish that makes small kitchens appear larger by bouncing light around the room. However, it requires more careful maintenance than laminate.

The Edge Banding Challenge
Neither Acrylic nor Laminate wraps around the edges of the cabinet door; they are flat sheets glued to the front face. The edges must be sealed with PVC "edge banding."
If edge banding is applied manually with contact cement (Fevicol) by a local carpenter, the edges will peel over time, and a dark glue line will become visible—ruining the look of a premium Acrylic kitchen. Both materials must be edge-banded using a high-temperature industrial machine (like a HOMAG machine) that applies the band seamlessly with hot-melt adhesive or PUR glue.
Which is Better for a Hyderabad Kitchen?
Your choice depends entirely on how the kitchen is used:
- Choose Laminate if: You have a heavy-duty kitchen, frequent deep-frying (Indian cooking produces sticky oil residue), children running around, or if a maid cleans the kitchen vigorously. Laminate can take a beating and survive.
- Choose Acrylic if: You want a show-stopping, premium aesthetic, you don't mind wiping the cabinets frequently with a soft microfiber cloth (never use a rough sponge on Acrylic), and you have a slightly higher budget.
Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood
Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

The Hybrid Solution: A very popular compromise is to use Acrylic for the upper wall cabinets (where they are out of reach of children and catch the light beautifully) and a durable matte Laminate for the lower base cabinets (which take the most physical abuse).

Yes, the high-gloss nature of Acrylic means that micro-scratches (from rough cleaning cloths or fingernails) are more visible than on a matte laminate. You must use only soft microfiber cloths for cleaning. Anti-scratch acrylics exist but are significantly more expensive.
Can I get a matte Acrylic finish?
Yes, matte acrylics are becoming popular. They offer a luxurious, velvety feel, but they are notorious for showing oily fingerprints, making them high-maintenance in a kitchen.
Is Laminate cheaper than Acrylic?
Yes, significantly. A high-quality 1mm laminate kitchen is generally 30–40% cheaper than an authentic Acrylic finish kitchen, making it the most cost-effective durable option.
Which shutter finish is the easiest to maintain?
Easiest first, using the same properties compared in the table above: matte or textured laminate, which scrubs clean and resists scratching well enough to survive vigorous cleaning; then standard gloss laminate; then high-gloss acrylic, which needs frequent wiping with a soft microfibre cloth and shows micro-scratches from rough cloths and fingernails; and hardest of all matte acrylic, which feels velvety and shows every oily fingerprint — a poor combination in a kitchen where deep-frying puts oil in the air. The ranking is close to the inverse of the gloss ranking, which is the trade-off worth understanding before choosing: what makes a small kitchen look larger by bouncing light is the same property that shows every mark. If a low-maintenance kitchen matters and the gloss look does too, the hybrid described above — acrylic on the upper cabinets, matte laminate on the base units that take the abuse — gets most of both.
How are AlcorOne projects paid for?
Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?
Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.
Choosing the right finish balances the look you want with the reality of how you cook and clean. Spending heavily on Acrylic only to have it scratched by improper cleaning is a frustrating experience.
