Pooja Room Interior Guide: Vizag Edition

A Pooja room is the spiritual center of a home. Whether you have a dedicated room in a Kompally villa or a compact niche in a Seethammadhara apartment, designing this space requires a delicate balance of traditional aesthetics, serene lighting, and modern, durable materials.

Designing for the Space

The design of your Pooja space depends entirely on the floor plan of your Vizag home.

1. The Dedicated Pooja Room

If you have a dedicated room, the focus is on creating a grand entrance and a serene interior. We frequently use double doors featuring intricate CNC-cut wood or brass Jalis. Inside, a stepped altar (mandap) allows for the proper arrangement of idols, with ample deep drawers below for storing oil, cotton wicks, and brassware.

2. The Integrated Pooja Niche

In compact 2BHK and 3BHK apartments, builders often provide a small niche in the living or dining area. We transform these niches into stunning focal points. By using folding (accordion) jali doors, the space can be closed off for privacy or opened wide during festivals. Backlit onyx panels or etched glass backdrops add immense depth to a shallow space.

Materials for a Sacred Space

A Pooja room should feel warm and traditional, even in a modern apartment.

  • Veneer and Wood: Teak or rosewood veneers finished with a rich melamine polish provide a classic, traditional feel. For a more contemporary look, PU-painted HDHMR boards with routed traditional motifs are excellent.
  • The Countertop: Oil spills and kumkum drops are inevitable. Never use wood or laminate for the main countertop where the lamps (diyas) are placed. We mandate Granite or Quartz for the countertop to ensure it is stain-proof, fire-proof, and easy to clean.

The Importance of Lighting

Lighting dictates the mood of the Pooja room. Harsh, bright white tube lights destroy the serene atmosphere.

We use layered, warm-white (2700K - 3000K) lighting. This includes soft cove lighting in the false ceiling to create a halo effect, focused spotlights highlighting specific idols, and LED strip lights concealed behind the CNC jalis to create beautiful, intricate shadow patterns on the floor.

Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

GradeStandardWater ResistanceBest Used For
BWP (Marine Ply)IS 710Boiling water — no delaminationKitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units
BWR PlywoodIS 303High humidity + splashesKitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage
Commercial / MRIS 303 (MR)Humidity only — no direct waterBedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks
HDHMRHigh moisture resistanceWardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes)
MDF / Particle BoardPoor — swells permanentlyLow-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely
Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

Frequently asked questions.

Can a Pooja unit be integrated into the living room TV unit?

Yes, if space is extremely tight. However, we design it with distinct boundaries (like a separate wooden arch or jali doors) so the sacred space feels visually separate from the entertainment area.

Is it safe to light diyas inside a wooden wooden cabinet?

Safety is paramount. We ensure the height between the stone countertop and the ceiling of the wooden unit is sufficient (usually minimum 2.5 to 3 feet). We also avoid placing any combustible laminates directly above the lamp area.

Can you customize the CNC jali design?

Absolutely. Our factory CNC machines can carve any pattern—from traditional lotus motifs and Om symbols to modern geometric Moroccan patterns—into HDHMR, Corian, or wood.

How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Your Pooja room should be a place of absolute peace, designed with respect for tradition and built with materials that are safe, beautiful, and easy to maintain.

AlcorOne crafts bespoke Pooja spaces for Vizag homes. From intricately carved jalis to flawless, fire-safe stone countertops, we build spiritual centers that anchor your home.
