Are 3D Renders and VR Walkthroughs Worth Paying For?
Renders have become the main thing interior firms sell, because they are the one deliverable a client can evaluate without training. That is exactly why they are worth being careful about: the easiest thing to judge is not the thing that determines whether your flat gets built correctly.
AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram.
What a render is genuinely good at
Three things, and they are real:
- Spatial comprehension. Most people cannot read a plan, and a render lets them understand proportion and scale — how tall a unit is against the room, whether a passage feels tight.
- Agreement between decision-makers. Two people looking at the same image are far more likely to be imagining the same flat than two people reading the same description.
- Catching layout mistakes early. A door that opens into a wardrobe or a switch behind a tall unit is obvious in a render and invisible in a list of line items.
That third point alone usually justifies the cost. Layout errors caught at render stage are free; the same errors caught on site are variations.

What a render cannot tell you
This is the part worth internalising, because renders are systematically flattering:
- Material accuracy. A laminate in a render is a texture file. It is not the sample. Finish decisions should be made from physical samples under your own light, never from a screen.
- Lighting. Render lighting is idealised — soft, even, from nowhere. Your flat has specific fittings in specific positions, and a rendered room routinely looks brighter and warmer than the built one.
- Board grade and hardware. The two things that decide whether the joinery lasts a decade are completely invisible in every render ever produced.
- Dimensions. Renders are frequently drawn with generous clearances that the real room does not have. Nothing in an image is a measurement.
- Scope. Rendered rooms often contain furniture, decor, curtains and plants that are not in the quotation. Ask which objects in the image you are actually buying — this single question prevents more disputes than any other.
On VR walkthroughs
Being direct: we do not offer VR walkthroughs, and we would not recommend paying much for one on a residential apartment project.
The reason is that VR solves the spatial-comprehension problem, which is the one problem a still render already solves adequately for a flat you can physically stand in. If you have the keys, walk the empty rooms with the drawings — that is better spatial information than any headset gives you, and free.
Where immersive review earns its cost is large commercial space, unbuilt property, or clients approving remotely who cannot visit. Sold as a premium residential upgrade, it is mostly a differentiator for the seller rather than a benefit for the buyer.
The four drawings that matter more
- Dimensioned elevations for every joinery item. Heights, widths, shutter splits, drawer positions. This is the drawing the workshop builds from.
- Sections through anything non-standard — a loft, a boxed beam, an integrated desk. Sections are where clashes get found.
- A finish schedule keyed to the drawings, naming the actual product code per surface, not "walnut laminate".
- Electrical and plumbing point layouts with heights. The most common post-handover regret in any flat is a socket in the wrong place, and it is the cheapest thing in the world to fix on paper.
A package with beautiful renders and none of these is a proposal, not a buildable set. See architect vs designer vs contractor for why that distinction determines who ends up making decisions on your behalf.
How many revisions should be included?
Ask, and get the number in writing, because this is where render-led engagements generate friction. What matters more than the count is the stage: revisions are cheap while the layout is fluid and expensive once elevations, electrical points and the BOQ have been built from the design. Front-load your changes.
A reasonable structure states a number of concept revisions, then treats post-approval changes as costed variations. That is not a firm being difficult — it reflects the real work of re-cutting drawings and re-pricing a BOQ.
The honest limit
We produce 3D visuals for our projects and we think they are worth doing. What we would not do is let a render substitute for the specification, because a render is the one deliverable in a fit-out that carries no commitment. Nothing in it is contractual. The BOQ, the elevations and the finish schedule are the documents you can hold someone to.
The practical test: ask for the dimensioned elevation of the same wall you were just shown a render of. A firm that can produce it in a day is designing. A firm that cannot is visualising, and somebody will be making the missing decisions later — on site, at speed, without you.

Frequently asked questions.
Should I choose finishes from a 3D render?
No. A laminate or veneer in a render is a texture file, not the product, and render lighting is idealised in a way your flat's actual fittings will not reproduce. Choose every finish from physical samples viewed under the light in the room where it will be installed, then use the render only to check how the combination reads across the whole space.
Are VR walkthroughs worth it for an apartment interior?
Rarely, and we do not offer them. VR mainly solves spatial comprehension, which still renders already handle adequately for a flat you can walk through yourself — if you have possession, walking the empty rooms with the drawings gives you better spatial information for free. Immersive review earns its cost on large commercial space, unbuilt property, or for clients approving remotely.
How do I know whether the furniture in the render is included?
Ask explicitly, item by item, and get it in writing. Rendered rooms routinely contain loose furniture, curtains, rugs, decor and plants that are not in the quotation, and this is one of the most common sources of expectation mismatch at handover. The BOQ is the list of what you are buying; the render is not.
How are AlcorOne projects paid for?
Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.
What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?
Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.
A render is worth paying for once, to catch layout mistakes and agree on intent. It is not worth mistaking for a specification, because nothing in it is one.
AlcorOne provides 3D visuals alongside the dimensioned elevations, finish schedule and line-item BOQ they are drawn from — so what you approve and what gets built are the same document.
