From Site Measurement to Installation: How the Process Actually Runs
Between signing a quotation and seeing units in your flat sits a sequence most homeowners never have explained to them. Knowing it tells you which decisions are still reversible, which are not, and why the answer to "can we change that?" shifts from yes to expensive at one specific moment.
Stage 1 — final site measurement, after civil work
There are two measurements on every project. The first, at quotation stage, is approximate: enough to price the job. The second is the one that matters, and it happens after civil, plumbing and electrical changes are complete.
The reason is that walls move. Not literally, but a chased and re-plastered wall is not where the drawing put it, a levelled floor changes a plinth height, and a new switchboard changes what can sit against a wall. Panels cut to pre-civil measurements arrive slightly wrong, and slightly wrong is visible for the life of the unit.
A proper final measurement records more than length. It captures wall plumb and floor level variation, diagonals in corners that are not square, window and door reveals, beam drops, shaft positions, and the exact position of every point and outlet.
Stage 2 — drawings and sign-off
Measurements become drawings: layouts, elevations, and unit-level detail showing shutter divisions, internal shelving, drawer positions and hardware placement. This is the last comfortable moment to change your mind.
Look at three things specifically before signing off. Shutter divisions, because they decide how the unit looks every day. Internal configuration against what you actually own — count your kitchen inventory and your longest garment before approving shelf spacing, as the wardrobe guide sets out. And handle and hardware positions, which are easy to overlook on paper and impossible to ignore in use.
Stage 3 — the cutting list
Approved drawings are converted into a cutting list: every panel, its exact dimensions, material, edge treatment and finish. This is the genuine point of no return, and it is worth understanding why.
Once panels are cut to size from full boards, they cannot be un-cut. A change after this point is not an edit; it is new material, and it is priced that way. If you are undecided about something, say so before sign-off rather than hoping it can be revisited — the honest answer at cutting-list stage is that it cannot, cheaply.
Stage 4 — factory production
Panels are cut, edge-banded, drilled for hardware on a defined grid, and assembled or flat-packed for site. The advantage of factory work is repeatability: machine-applied edge banding and machine-drilled hinge positions are more consistent than the same operations done on a landing with a hand router.
This stage runs on a queue, which is why production slots and material procurement appear in payment schedules. It is also the stage during which your flat should be getting its painting done, because the two do not interfere.
Stage 5 — delivery, and the constraint nobody plans for
Getting finished panels to the eleventh floor of a Hyderabad high-rise is a real design constraint, not an afterthought.
- Lift internal dimensions and door width determine the longest panel that can travel intact. A full-height wardrobe side panel is often close to that limit.
- Staircase turns are the fallback, and a tight half-landing can defeat a panel that the lift also refused.
- Association rules frequently govern service lift use, protection, timing windows and where a delivery vehicle may stand.
Where access defeats a panel, the honest solutions are to redesign the unit into a joint that lands somewhere sensible, or to assemble that unit on site. Both are legitimate; both should be decided at drawing stage, once someone has measured the lift. Discovering it on delivery day is what turns a one-day install into a week.
Stage 6 — installation
Installation is levelling, fixing and alignment. Carcases are set level and plumb against walls that are neither, which is exactly why the measurement stage recorded those deviations. Shutters are hung and adjusted, hardware is fitted, and gaps and scribes are closed against the walls.
Countertops and glass are measured on the installed units, not from drawings, and follow a few days later. That is not a delay; a stone slab templated from a drawing rather than from the built kitchen is a stone slab that does not fit.
Stage 7 — snag list and closure
Walk the site with the site-in-charge and write everything down: alignment, shutter gaps, scratches, a drawer that does not run cleanly, a missing end panel, silicone lines. Snags are normal on every project — the measure of a firm is closure time, not the absence of a list.

Where your leverage sits
Reading this sequence backwards is useful. Your influence is highest at drawings, effectively over at the cutting list, and after that you are inspecting rather than deciding. Homeowners who spend their attention at sign-off get the interiors they wanted; those who save their attention for installation day spend it arguing about panels that were cut correctly to a drawing nobody read.

Why is the final measurement not taken at quotation stage?
Because civil, plumbing and electrical work changes the surfaces being measured. A wall that has been chased and re-plastered, a floor that has been levelled, a relocated switchboard — each shifts the numbers by enough to matter on a fitted unit.
Can I still change the design after sign-off?
Until the cutting list is released, changes are usually manageable. After panels are cut, a change means new material and is priced accordingly. If something is undecided, flag it before sign-off rather than hoping for flexibility later.
How long does installation itself take?
Installation is a small part of the calendar — usually days, not weeks — with countertops and glass following once they can be measured on the installed units. Most of the elapsed time in an interior project is design, approvals and production, not fit-out.
What happens if a panel will not fit in the lift?
It gets redesigned into a jointed unit or assembled on site. Both are normal. What is not normal is finding out on delivery day, which is why the lift and staircase should be measured before drawings are signed off.
Should I be present during installation?
Helpful but not essential if you have a named site contact and photographs at defined milestones. What is worth being present for is the snag walk-through, because writing the list yourself is more thorough than approving someone else's.
