The kitchen layout in a Hyderabad apartment is almost always dictated by the builder's slab and wet-point positions — the plumbing inlet and drainage cannot move without major civil work. Before discussing design, draw your kitchen's fixed constraints: the main door position, any windows, the position of the wet-wall (where the sink must go), and the location of the chimney duct or external wall for exhaust routing.

The work triangle rule: the three primary kitchen stations — sink, hob, and refrigerator — should form a triangle with each leg between 1,200 and 2,700 mm. A total triangle perimeter of 3,600–7,900 mm is the ergonomic sweet spot. Larger and the kitchen becomes tiring to use; smaller and the stations interfere with each other.
Platform Heights
Builder-standard kitchen platforms in Hyderabad are typically 860 mm (top of platform to floor). For most users, this is slightly low. The ergonomic standard is elbow height minus 100–150 mm — for an average Indian female user (standing height 155–165 cm), this works out to 880–920 mm; for taller users (170+ cm), 920–960 mm.
If you are having the platform slab fabricated (granite or quartz on site), the height is fully adjustable. If the builder has already laid a platform, check the actual height with a tape before designing the joinery — builder platforms vary ±40 mm from drawing dimensions.
Wall cabinet height: The gap between the platform top and the bottom of wall cabinets should be 500–600 mm. This gives space for small appliances (mixer, toaster, kettle) to sit on the platform without obstruction, and allows a standard-height adult to see into the wall cabinets clearly.

Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.
Kitchen joinery is the one room where material grade selection has a direct, measurable impact on longevity. Hyderabad's humidity combined with daily sink splashes, steam from cooking, and occasional under-sink leaks means the wrong grade of plywood will delaminate within 3–5 years.
The kitchen plywood rules:

- Wall cabinets: BWR IS 303 is fine. BWP is overkill for wall cabinets that see no direct water.
- HDHMR shutters: HDHMR (High Density High Moisture Resistant) board is excellent for kitchen shutter doors — it is denser than MDF, holds paint or PU better, and resists swelling at edges. Do not use standard MDF for kitchen shutters in Hyderabad.

National Building Code (NBC) Planning Basics
These NBC guidelines apply to all residential interiors in India and shape layout, ceiling height, and electrical decisions:

Practical rule: Invest in Blum or Hettich for the kitchen (daily-use drawers and pull-outs). Ebco or Hettich is adequate for bedroom wardrobe hinges and shelves.
Kitchen hardware is used more intensively than any other room. The pull-out basket under the hob, the drawer next to the sink, the cabinet hinges on the wall shutters — all cycle 10–20 times a day.
