Home Office Interior Design in Hyderabad: Ergonomics and Setup
A dedicated home office requires more than just a table and a chair. To sustain 8-hour workdays, you need precise ergonomic dimensions, glare-free lighting, and a setup that hides the inevitable mess of cables.
AlcorOne Solutions is a Hyderabad-based interior execution studio specialising in residential and commercial fit-outs across Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, and the Financial District. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.
Step 1: Ergonomic Desk Dimensions
A dining table is 750 mm high, which is too high for prolonged typing without an adjustable chair. For a custom home office desk, get the dimensions right:
- Height: 720–740 mm from floor to top of the desk.
- Depth: Minimum 600 mm for a laptop; 700–750 mm if you use large dual monitors, so screens aren't too close to your eyes.
- Width: Minimum 1,200 mm for a single user, 1,500 mm is ideal for spreading out documents.
Step 2: Wire and Cable Management
Do not let cables ruin the look of your office. Plan wire management before fabrication:
- Include a 60 mm grommet hole at the back of the desk to drop cables down.
- Install a cable tray or a false back panel (150 mm deep) underneath the desk to hold power strips, laptop bricks, and excess wires.
- Locate a 16A and multiple 6A sockets just below desk level (approx. 600 mm from the floor) to avoid running cables to a distant wall.
Step 3: Lighting for Video Calls
Overhead recessed lighting creates harsh shadows on your face during video calls. For a professional look:
- Position your desk facing a window for natural, diffuse front lighting.
- If facing a wall, install a soft LED strip (CRI 90+, 4,000 K daylight) behind your monitor or use an adjustable desk lamp that bounces light off the wall.
- Avoid having a bright window directly behind you, which will silhouette you on camera.
Step 4: The Background (Aesthetics)
Your background is your professional presentation. A well-designed bookshelf or a subtle fluted panel wall behind your chair looks excellent on camera. Avoid deep, dark colors which can make the room look gloomy on video.
Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood
Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:
| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP (Marine Ply) | IS 710 | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| BWR Plywood | IS 303 | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| Commercial / MR | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| HDHMR | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| MDF / Particle Board | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |
Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

What is the best lighting temperature for a home office?
A neutral daylight color temperature of around 4,000 Kelvin is best for concentration and looks most natural on video calls.
Can I use Commercial MR plywood for an office desk?
Yes, Commercial MR IS 303 is perfectly suitable for a dry home office environment and provides excellent structural strength for wide desks.
