The Invisible Enemy: Salt Air

Kakinada is a major port city. The constant sea breeze carries microscopic salt particles deep inland. When this salty air enters your home, it settles on every surface. Salt is highly hygroscopic (it attracts moisture), creating a localized brine on metal surfaces that aggressively accelerates the oxidation (rusting) process.

The Mistake: Accepting "Standard" Hardware

Most budget contractors use Mild Steel (MS) hardware with a thin nickel or zinc plating as their default offering to keep quote prices low.

In a dry city like Hyderabad, this MS hardware works perfectly. In Kakinada, it is a ticking time bomb. The microscopic scratches created by the screws during installation allow the salt air to bypass the thin plating. Once the underlying mild steel is exposed, rust spreads rapidly.

The Consequences of Rust:

  • Staining: Brown rust dust will bleed onto your clean white cabinet interiors.
  • Failure: Squeaking hinges will eventually snap under the weight of the door, causing heavy wooden shutters to fall.
  • Jammed Drawers: Rusted telescopic channels will bind, making it impossible to open or close your heavy kitchen drawers.

The Solution: Demand SS 304

To survive the Kakinada climate, you must explicitly demand Stainless Steel Grade 304 (SS 304) for all critical hardware.

SS 304 contains high levels of chromium and nickel. The chromium forms an invisible, self-repairing oxide layer that completely blocks oxygen and salt from reaching the underlying steel. It simply will not rust under normal coastal conditions.

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

Can I use WD-40 to protect my standard hinges?

Spraying lubricants like WD-40 can temporarily displace moisture and delay rust, but it is not a permanent solution. The oil attracts dust, creating a sticky mess inside your clean cabinets. Upgrading to SS 304 is the only permanent fix.

Is SS 201 hardware okay for Kakinada?

No. SS 201 is a cheaper alloy that uses manganese instead of nickel. It is highly susceptible to pitting corrosion in salt-heavy environments. Always insist on SS 304.

How do I test if my contractor actually installed SS 304?

Take a strong magnet to the hinge. Mild steel and cheap stainless steel (like the 400 series) will attract the magnet strongly. True austenitic SS 304 is non-magnetic (or has an extremely weak magnetic pull).

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Replacing rusted hinges every two years is frustrating and damages the screw holes in your woodwork. The initial cost of upgrading to premium hardware is insignificant compared to the long-term headache of failing cabinets.
