# How to Tell Whether You Actually Got Blum, Hettich or Häfele

Hardware is the perfect substitution. It is small, it is hidden inside a cabinet, it is invisible in a 3D render, and a soft-close hinge from an unbranded supplier feels almost identical for the first six months. By the time it does not, the project is closed and the invoice is paid.

AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram.

## Why hardware specifically

Every other premium line item announces itself. A laminate is visible, a countertop is visible, a finish is visible. Hardware is inside a closed cabinet, and its performance degrades slowly enough that the failure arrives long after anyone would connect it to a substitution.

It is also a line item where the price gap is large enough to be worth substituting. That combination — high value, low visibility, delayed failure — is what makes it the most commonly swapped component in an Indian fit-out.

## Hardware: [Blum](https://www.blum.com/in/en/) vs [Hettich](https://www.hettich.com/en-in/home) vs [Häfele](https://www.hafeleindia.com/) vs Ebco

| Brand | Origin | Best Known For | Price Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Blum** | Austria | Tandem drawer systems, Servo-Drive, Legrabox | Premium |
| **Häfele** | Germany | Concealed hinges, synchronised sliding systems, full fit-out catalogue | Premium |
| **Hettich** | Germany | InnoTech drawer systems, Quadro runners, soft-close hinges | Mid–Premium |
| **Ebco** | India | Channel slides, budget hinges, wardrobe accessories | Mid |
| **Godrej** | India | Locks, storage accessories, basic drawer channels | Entry–Mid |

> **Practical rule:** Invest in Blum or Hettich for the kitchen (daily-use drawers and pull-outs). Ebco or Hettich is adequate for bedroom wardrobe hinges and shelves.

## Five checks, in order of usefulness

### 1. Read the part marking on the component itself

Genuine European cabinet hardware carries the manufacturer's name and a part or series identifier moulded or stamped into the metal or plastic — not printed on a sticker, and not only on the packaging. Open a cabinet, look at the hinge arm and the drawer runner, and find the marking. A component with no marking at all is the clearest signal available, and it requires no expertise to spot.

### 2. Match the part number to the quotation

This is why the BOQ wording matters so much. "Premium soft-close hinges" cannot be verified against anything. A named brand and series can: you read the marking, you read the line item, and they either match or they do not. If your quotation does not name a model, you have no verification available at any stage — which is the actual problem, more than counterfeiting is.

### 3. Ask for the dealer invoice

Branded hardware is bought through authorised distribution, and the purchase generates an invoice naming the brand, the product and the quantity. Ask to see it. A contractor buying genuine hardware has no reason to withhold it, and the quantities on it should be consistent with the number of hinges and runners in your flat.

### 4. Register the warranty in your own name

The manufacturer's warranty is the strongest verification there is, because it can only be registered against a genuine product. Registering it also puts the claim in your hands rather than the contractor's, which is where you want it once the project is closed. This is worth insisting on regardless of any suspicion — it is a benefit you paid for and it is routinely left unclaimed.

### 5. Test the action, knowing its limits

A genuine soft-close mechanism closes at a consistent speed regardless of how hard you push it, and it does the same on a heavy door as a light one. A cheap damper closes fast when pushed hard and slows only at the very end. Do this on several doors — consistency across the flat is more informative than any single door.

Be honest about this check's limit, though: good counterfeits feel fine when new. Feel is a supporting signal, not proof. The markings and the invoice are the evidence.

## The BOQ wording that makes this unnecessary

Verification at handover is a fallback. The real fix happens before signing, and it is a wording change:

- **Weak:** "Premium imported soft-close hinges and channels."
- **Strong:** "Hinges: [brand] [series], quantity 84. Drawer runners: [brand] [series], full-extension soft-close, quantity 26. Substitution only by written variation, approved before installation."

The second version makes substitution a contractual event rather than a site decision. It also tells you something useful during tendering: a supplier who will not name models is either not buying branded hardware or is keeping the option open. See [BOQ vs quotation](https://www.alcorone.com/blog/boq-vs-quotation-cost-creep/) for why this generalises to every line item.

## What to do if you find a substitution

1. **Photograph the component and the marking** before raising it, alongside the relevant BOQ line.
2. **Count it.** Establish whether it is the whole flat or a few cabinets — a partial substitution is sometimes a genuine supply shortfall rather than intent.
3. **Raise it in writing** against the line item, not verbally.
4. **Ask for the dealer invoice** as the tie-breaker.
5. **Do not release the final payment** until it is resolved. This is precisely what a retained final milestone is for.

## The honest limit

Not every unbranded component is a fraud. Hardware genuinely goes out of stock mid-project, and a competent contractor sometimes substitutes an equivalent to hold a schedule. The distinction is not what was installed — it is whether you were asked. A substitution proposed in writing before installation is project management. The same substitution discovered at handover is something else.

And the more common problem in this market is not counterfeiting at all. It is quotations that never named a model, so nothing was ever verifiable and nobody technically broke a promise. Fixing the paperwork prevents more disputes than any inspection at handover will.

## Frequently asked *questions.*

### Can I tell genuine hardware just by how it feels?

Only partially. A genuine soft-close closes at the same controlled speed however hard you push it, and behaves the same on a heavy door as a light one, whereas a cheap damper closes fast under force and slows only at the end. But good counterfeits feel acceptable when new, so treat feel as a supporting signal. The moulded or stamped part marking and the dealer invoice are the actual evidence.

### What should the BOQ say about hardware?

Brand and series per line item, with quantities — "Hinges: [brand] [series], qty 84" rather than "premium soft-close hinges" — plus a clause that substitution requires written approval before installation. Without a named model there is nothing to verify at handover and no promise that was broken, which is why vague wording causes more disputes than counterfeiting does.

### Is Indian hardware always worse than European?

No, and specifying it is a legitimate budget decision rather than a compromise. The practical rule is to spend on the kitchen, where drawers and pull-outs take daily heavy cycles, and accept mid-tier hardware on bedroom wardrobe hinges and shelves. What matters is that the choice is written down and priced honestly, not that everything is imported.

### How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

### What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

You cannot verify a promise that was never specific. Most hardware disputes are decided by the wording of the quotation, months before anyone opens a cabinet.

AlcorOne names hardware by brand and model per line item in the BOQ, and registers the manufacturer's warranty documentation in the client's name at handover so the claim belongs to you.
