# Quartz vs Granite: Choosing the Best Kitchen Countertop

For decades, black granite was the undisputed king of Indian kitchens. Today, engineered quartz has largely taken over the premium segment. Here is a breakdown of why that shift happened and which stone is right for your cooking style.

AlcorOne Solutions is a Hyderabad-based interior execution studio specialising in residential and commercial fit-outs across Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, and the Financial District. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

## What is Granite?

Granite is a 100% natural igneous rock, quarried directly from the earth, cut into slabs, and polished. Because it is a natural product, every slab is unique, featuring variations in grain, color, and veining.

In Hyderabad, standard black granite (like Jet Black or Telephone Black) has been the default kitchen countertop for decades due to its incredible heat resistance and affordability.

## What is Quartz?

Quartz (specifically, engineered quartz) is a man-made stone. It consists of roughly 90–94% crushed natural quartz crystals bound together with 6–10% polymer resins and pigments.

Because it is engineered, quartz offers a uniform appearance. It can be manufactured to look like pure white marble, concrete, or absolute solid colors without the unpredictable variations of natural stone.

## Direct Comparison: Quartz vs Granite

Quartz vs Granite Countertops

| Feature | Engineered Quartz | Natural Granite |
|---|---|---|
| **Porosity (Stain Resistance)** | Non-porous (Highly stain resistant) | Porous (Can absorb oil/turmeric if unsealed) |
| **Appearance** | Uniform, consistent colors (e.g., pure white) | Unique, natural variations and grains |
| **Heat Resistance** | Moderate (Resins can scorch from hot pans) | Very High (Can take direct heat) |
| **Maintenance** | Zero maintenance required | Requires periodic chemical sealing |
| **Joint Visibility** | Joints can be made nearly invisible | Joints are usually visible due to grain mismatch |
| **Cost** | Premium (₹250–₹600+ per sq.ft) | Affordable to Premium (₹100–₹400 per sq.ft) |

## The Turmeric Test: Why Porosity Matters

The single biggest functional difference between the two stones is porosity. Indian cooking involves heavy use of turmeric (haldi), oil, and acidic ingredients like tamarind and lemon.

**Granite is naturally porous.** If a spill of turmeric-infused oil is left on light-colored granite overnight, it can seep into the micro-pores of the stone, causing a permanent yellow stain. To prevent this, granite must be chemically sealed once a year.

**Quartz is non-porous.** The polymer resins fill all the microscopic voids between the stone crystals. A turmeric spill on a pure white quartz counter will sit on the surface and can be wiped away with soap and water, even hours later. Quartz requires absolutely no sealing.

## The Heat Warning for Quartz

While Quartz wins on stain resistance, Granite wins on heat resistance. You can take a boiling hot kadhai off the stove and place it directly on a granite counter without issue.

If you place that same hot pan directly on a Quartz counter, the intense heat can melt or scorch the polymer resins binding the stone, leaving a permanent cloudy or burn mark. You must always use a trivet or hot pad with Quartz.

## Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| **BWP (Marine Ply)** | [IS 710](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.710.2010) | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| **BWR Plywood** | [IS 303](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.303.1989) | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| **Commercial / MR** | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| **HDHMR** | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| **MDF / Particle Board** | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |

> **Rule:** BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

## Which Should You Choose?

**Choose Granite if:** You want a highly durable, heat-resistant work surface, you prefer darker colors (where stains don't show), or you are working with a tighter budget.

**Choose Quartz if:** You want a modern, light-colored kitchen (especially white or light grey marble looks), you want zero maintenance regarding sealing, and you prioritize a uniform, seamless aesthetic.

## Frequently asked *questions.*

### Will white quartz stain from Indian cooking?

High-quality engineered quartz is non-porous and highly resistant to stains, including turmeric. Spills will wipe off easily. However, you should still avoid leaving harsh chemicals or highly pigmented spills sitting for days.

### Can you see the joints in a quartz countertop?

Because quartz has a uniform pattern, fabricators can match the epoxy resin perfectly to the stone color, making the seams nearly invisible. This is much harder to do with granite due to its natural, random grain.

### Is Quartz more expensive than Granite?

Generally, yes. While premium exotic granites can be very expensive, the starting price for a good quality Quartz (around ₹250/sq.ft) is significantly higher than standard black granite (which can start around ₹100–₹120/sq.ft).

### How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

### What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

The countertop is the hardest working surface in your home. Selecting the right stone requires balancing your aesthetic desires with your daily cooking habits.

AlcorOne helps you make the right choice. We template your kitchen precisely and use CNC fabrication for both Granite and Quartz, ensuring tight, nearly invisible seams and perfect sink cutouts.
