# PU Finish vs Laminate: The Cost of a Seamless Look

Laminate is the workhorse of Indian interiors, but Polyurethane (PU) paint is the hallmark of luxury. If you hate the visible edge-banding lines on laminate doors or want classical grooved designs, PU is your answer. Here is what you need to know about the cost and upkeep.

AlcorOne Solutions is a Hyderabad-based interior execution studio specialising in residential and commercial fit-outs across Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, and the Financial District. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

## What is a PU Finish?

PU stands for Polyurethane. It is a highly durable, automotive-grade paint that is sprayed onto the cabinet door (the shutter) in a dust-free booth. It forms a hard, continuous coating over the front face and all four edges of the door. It is available in high-gloss, matte, and satin finishes.

## What is Laminate?

Laminates are pre-manufactured sheets of compressed paper and resin glued onto a plywood or MDF core. Because laminate is a sheet, it only covers the flat face of the door. The exposed edges of the door must be covered separately with PVC edge banding.

## The Two Major Advantages of PU

PU is significantly more expensive than Laminate. Homeowners pay this premium for two specific design capabilities that Laminate cannot provide:

### 1. Seamless Edges

Laminate doors always have a visible joint where the front sheet meets the PVC edge banding. Over time, dust can settle in this microscopic gap, creating a dark line outlining every door. Because PU is a liquid paint sprayed over the entire door, the edges are completely seamless. The door looks like a single, solid slab of color.

### 2. Routed and Grooved Designs (Wainscoting/Shaker Style)

You cannot bend a standard 1mm laminate sheet into a groove. If you want a classic "Shaker" style kitchen door or a wardrobe with vertical fluted grooves, the design must be CNC-routed into an HDHMR or MDF board. Once the board is carved, it must be painted. PU is the industry standard for finishing these intricate, carved profiles.

## Direct Comparison: PU Finish vs Laminate

| Feature | PU Finish (Polyurethane Paint) | Laminate Finish (1mm) |
|---|---|---|
| **Aesthetics** | Seamless edges, luxurious feel | Visible edge-banding lines |
| **Design Flexibility** | Can be applied to carved/grooved surfaces | Restricted to completely flat surfaces |
| **Durability & Scratch Resistance** | Moderate (Can chip if hit hard) | High (Very resistant to impacts) |
| **Repairability** | Can be repainted/touched up | Cannot be repaired (requires replacement) |
| **Application Method** | Sprayed in a specialized booth (Time-consuming) | Pressed onto board (Fast) |
| **Cost (Finished Shutter)** | ₹1,400–₹2,000 per sq.ft | ₹600–₹900 per sq.ft |

## Why is PU So Expensive?

A PU finish is a highly labor-intensive process. A premium PU shutter undergoes 5 to 7 coats of material. The raw HDHMR board is sanded, sealed, primed twice (sanded between coats), base-coated with the color, and finally finished with a clear protective topcoat. The entire process takes days in a climate-controlled, dust-free spray booth to ensure a flawless finish. In contrast, Laminate is simply pressed onto a board in minutes.

## Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| **BWP (Marine Ply)** | [IS 710](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.710.2010) | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| **BWR Plywood** | [IS 303](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.303.1989) | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| **Commercial / MR** | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| **HDHMR** | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| **MDF / Particle Board** | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |

> **Rule:** BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

## Which Should You Choose?

**Choose Laminate if:** You are on a strict budget, your design requires perfectly flat, modern slabs without grooves, or you need maximum resistance to scratching and impacts (like in a kids' room or a heavy-use rental kitchen).

**Choose PU if:** You are building a premium home, you detest the look of edge-banding lines, or your design aesthetic leans towards classical, neo-classical, or transitional styles that require routed profiles and Shaker doors.

## Frequently asked *questions.*

### Does PU paint yellow over time?

High-quality, branded PU paints (like Asian Paints or ICA) have excellent UV resistance and do not yellow significantly. However, cheaper local paints may yellow when exposed to direct sunlight over several years.

### Can a carpenter do a PU finish on site?

While it is possible to hand-spray PU on site, the results are rarely premium. Airborne dust settles on the wet paint, creating a gritty texture. For a flawless, automotive-like finish, PU must be applied in a factory's dust-free spray booth.

### Is a PU finish waterproof?

The PU paint layer itself acts as an excellent waterproof sealant for the wood underneath. However, if the paint chips off, the exposed MDF/HDHMR core will be vulnerable to water.

### How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

### What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

The finish of your cabinetry dictates the overall luxury level of your home. While laminate is functional and durable, a factory-finished PU door elevates the interior to a truly premium standard.

AlcorOne produces flawless PU finishes using HDHMR cores and state-of-the-art spray booths. Whether you want a high-gloss seamless slab or a classic matte Shaker door, we deliver automotive-grade perfection.
