# MR vs BWP Plywood in Coastal and Malnad Karnataka

Most plywood advice written for Indian homes assumes one enemy: water. Along the Karnataka coast and up into the Malnad belt there are two, they arrive by different routes, and the grade that defeats one is not automatically the grade that defeats the other. This guide covers Mangaluru and Shivamogga, and it is as specific about where you can safely save money as about where you cannot.

A Mangaluru home and a Shivamogga home both destroy under-specified plywood, but the mechanism is not the same, and that distinction decides where your money should go.

**On the coast, the enemy is salt.** Mangaluru's marine air carries chloride. Chloride does very little to the plywood itself — but it is brutally efficient at corroding the metal fixed *into* the plywood. Hinges seize, screws rust and lose their grip in the board, and the joint fails long before the board does. A homeowner who spends the entire upgrade budget on BWP and then accepts unnamed "branded" hinges has protected the cheap component and left the expensive one exposed.

**Inland in the Malnad belt, the enemy is time.** Shivamogga sits at the gateway to some of the heaviest monsoon rainfall in India. What matters is not any single soaking but the number of consecutive weeks at very high ambient relative humidity. MR-grade plywood does not need to be splashed to fail here. It absorbs moisture from the air, slowly, through raw edges and unsealed backs, until the urea-formaldehyde bond gives up. Then comes the failure Malnad homeowners actually report: not swelling, but *fungus* — black spotting on the back panels of wardrobes, and the musty smell that never quite leaves the room.

## Where BWP is genuinely non-negotiable

Applied to a real floor plan in either city, the grade rule is stricter than the national default. The general Indian guidance is "BWP within one metre of a water source." Here it should be read as "BWP anywhere the board cannot dry out."

## The two places BWP is a waste of money

Every honest material guide should be willing to argue downward, and there are two lines where a coastal upsell is simply not defensible.

**Internal drawer boxes and shelving inside a dry-room wardrobe.** These sit behind a shutter, in a ventilated cavity, in a bedroom. They are not exposed to the ambient assault that the back panel is. Specifying BWP throughout a bedroom wardrobe can add a meaningful sum to a quotation and buys close to nothing.

**Loft and overhead storage in a dry room.** Warm air rises and lofts are among the driest volumes in the house. MR is correct there.

The money saved on those two lines is very close to the money required to move the kitchen wall cabinets and the wardrobe back panels up to BWP — which is the trade this guide is really recommending. It is not a bigger budget. It is the same budget, spent where the failures actually happen.

## Grade is a claim until the BOQ says so

"Waterproof plywood" is not a grade. It is a word. The board grade only becomes enforceable when the document names the standard — **BWP to IS 710**, **BWR to IS 303**, **MR to IS 303** — line by line, room by room, with the brand named alongside it.

This matters beyond the delivery itself. A ten-year carcass warranty is conditional on the board grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. If the line says "waterproof ply", no grade has been named, and there is nothing for that cover to attach to. The vague line does not merely risk you receiving a cheaper board — it removes the document that would have let you prove you did. ## The hardware point, which matters more here than the board

If you take one thing from this page, take this: in Mangaluru, hardware grade deserves at least as much of your attention as board grade. Salt air attacks metal, and "soft-close branded hinges" tells you nothing about the metallurgy. The specification you want written down is **SS 304 stainless steel** for hinges, channels and any exposed fastener, with the brand *and series* named — within any major hardware brand, the series is what sets both the price and the corrosion behaviour.

## Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

### Is the plywood advice for Mangaluru and Shivamogga really the same?

The grade table is nearly identical, but for different reasons, and the hardware advice diverges sharply. Mangaluru's marine air makes SS 304 hardware essential because chloride corrodes metal. Shivamogga is inland and has no salt load, so standard quality hardware is acceptable there — but its sustained monsoon humidity makes the wardrobe back panel and fungus prevention the priority instead.

### My contractor says BWP everywhere is safest. Is that wrong?

It is not wrong, it is just inefficient. BWP everywhere is a defensible specification that will not fail. It typically costs 20% to 30% more than MR on every line it touches, and on internal drawer boxes and dry-room lofts it buys almost nothing. A room-by-room specification protects the same failure points for less.

### How do I tell genuine BWP from a board that is merely labelled BWP?

True BWP marine plywood usually shows a dark brown or reddish core from the phenolic resin; MR plywood has a lighter, blonde core. Ask to see the manufacturer's IS 710 certification stamp on the board itself, and check it at delivery rather than at quotation, which is when substitution actually happens.

### Does fungus on a wardrobe back panel mean the plywood was the wrong grade?

Not always. Fungus needs moisture and still air, so a correctly graded panel installed flat against a damp external wall with no ventilation gap can still spot. Grade and installation detail have to be right together — which is why the back panel gets called out separately from the carcass in the table above.

Plywood grade is the least visible decision in an interior project and one of the few that is effectively permanent. Once a kitchen is installed, nobody is going to pull out the carcass to check what the board actually was.
