Modernizing Rayalaseema Homes: Blending Veneer with Acrylic
Homes in the Rayalaseema region—spanning Kurnool, Anantapur, and Tirupati—have historically favored heavy, traditional aesthetics dominated by dark, solid wood. Today, homeowners want a lighter, more modern feel without losing that cultural warmth. The secret to this "transitional" design is expertly blending rich natural veneers with ultra-modern, high-gloss acrylics.
AlcorOne Solutions is a Hyderabad-based interior execution studio specialising in residential and commercial fit-outs across Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, and the Financial District. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.
The Transitional Aesthetic
Transitional design is the exact midpoint between traditional and contemporary. If you use too much wood, the house feels dark and dated. If you use only high-gloss acrylic, the house feels cold and clinical.
By blending the two, you create a space that feels deeply anchored yet remarkably bright and spacious.
Strategy 1: The Two-Tone Kitchen
This is the most popular way to modernize a home while maintaining warmth.
- Base Cabinets (Veneer/Textured Laminate): Use a dark, rich walnut or teak finish for all the base cabinets below the countertop. This grounds the kitchen and provides the traditional wooden warmth that Rayalaseema homeowners love. It is also excellent at hiding scuff marks from shoes.
- Wall Cabinets (Acrylic): Use a bright, high-gloss white or cream acrylic for all the upper wall cabinets. The glossy surface acts like a mirror, bouncing light around the room and making the kitchen feel twice as large and incredibly modern.
Strategy 2: The Living Room TV Unit
The TV unit is the focal point of the living room and the perfect place to blend materials.
We typically design the massive back-paneling using a premium natural wood veneer, polished to a matte finish. This provides a rich, textured backdrop. We then construct the floating storage drawers below the TV using a sleek, handle-less acrylic finish in charcoal or beige. The contrast between the organic grain of the wood and the flawless, reflective surface of the acrylic creates instant luxury.
Strategy 3: Wardrobe Interplay
In the master bedroom, a massive wall-to-wall wardrobe can look overwhelming.
To break up the visual weight, we design the main wardrobe shutters (doors) using high-gloss acrylic, which reflects the bedroom lighting and makes the room feel airy. We then frame the entire wardrobe, or add an integrated open display shelf in the center, using a contrasting dark wood veneer. This framing adds traditional elegance to a highly modern storage system.
Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood
Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:
| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP (Marine Ply) | IS 710 | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| BWR Plywood | IS 303 | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| Commercial / MR | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| HDHMR | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| MDF / Particle Board | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |
Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

Frequently asked questions.
Are natural veneers difficult to maintain?
Veneers require a bit more care than laminates. They should be wiped with a dry microfiber cloth, and harsh chemicals should be avoided. A high-quality PU (Polyurethane) polish seals the veneer, protecting it from minor moisture and making it relatively easy to maintain.
Is acrylic easily scratched?
Standard acrylic can scratch if wiped with an abrasive pad. However, premium anti-scratch acrylics are highly durable for vertical surfaces like wardrobe doors and upper kitchen cabinets. Never use acrylic for a countertop.
Can I use laminate instead of veneer for the wood look?
Yes. If you have children or pets and want zero maintenance, modern textured wood-grain laminates mimic the look and feel of real wood almost perfectly, while being scratch-resistant and highly affordable.
Balancing two dramatically different materials requires a precise understanding of color theory, texture, and light. When done correctly, it results in a breathtaking, timeless home.
AlcorOne specializes in transitional design. We expertly source the finest natural veneers and premium acrylics, delivering a factory-finished home that perfectly bridges the gap between tradition and modern luxury.
