# Modular Kitchen Mistakes to Avoid: The Ten That Cost the Most

A beautiful kitchen is useless if you constantly bump your elbows, lack counter space beside the hob, or have to bend down and dig pans out of a deep cabinet. These are the ten mistakes we see most often in Hyderabad modular kitchens — ranked by what they cost to live with, and what they cost to fix once the countertop is down.

AlcorOne Solutions is a Hyderabad-based interior execution studio specialising in residential and commercial fit-outs across Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, and the Financial District. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

## Mistake 1: Ignoring the Work Triangle

The "Work Triangle" is the path between the three most used areas: the stove, the sink, and the refrigerator.

If these three are too far apart, cooking becomes exhausting. If they are too close (e.g., the sink is directly adjacent to the stove with no counter space between them), you have no prep area. Ensure there is at least 600 mm of clear countertop space between the sink and the hob for chopping and prep work.

## Mistake 2: Using Shelves Instead of Drawers for Base Cabinets

Many budget kitchens use hinged doors with fixed shelves for the lower base cabinets. This is an ergonomic nightmare. To get a pot from the back of the bottom shelf, you have to get down on your knees and pull everything else out first.

Always use heavy-duty tandem drawers for base cabinets. Pulling a drawer out brings all the contents to you, making every inch of storage instantly accessible from a standing position.

## Mistake 3: Wrong Material for the Sink Cabinet

The cabinet under the sink is the most vulnerable spot in your house. Minor leaks from the plumbing trap or the RO water purifier are inevitable.

If your contractor uses standard MDF or Commercial MR plywood here, it will swell, rot, and harbor mold within a year. You must insist on BWP (Boiling Water Proof) [IS 710](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.710.2010) marine plywood or 100% waterproof WPC/PVC boards for the sink unit carcass.

## Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

| Grade | Standard | Water Resistance | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| **BWP (Marine Ply)** | IS 710 | Boiling water — no delamination | Kitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units |
| **BWR Plywood** | [IS 303](https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.303.1989) | High humidity + splashes | Kitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage |
| **Commercial / MR** | IS 303 (MR) | Humidity only — no direct water | Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks |
| **HDHMR** | — | High moisture resistance | Wardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes) |
| **MDF / Particle Board** | — | Poor — swells permanently | Low-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely |

> **Rule:** BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

## Mistake 4: Insufficient Lighting

A single tube light in the center of the kitchen ceiling is the worst possible lighting setup. When you stand at the counter to chop vegetables, your body blocks the light, casting a dark shadow exactly where you are working.

You need task lighting. Always install LED strip lights under the upper wall cabinets to illuminate the countertop directly, ensuring safe and clear visibility for prep work.

## Mistake 5: Forgetting the Appliance Plugs

Modern Indian kitchens use a lot of appliances: mixer-grinder, microwave, toaster, air fryer, coffee maker, and RO purifier.

If you don't plan the electrical points before tiling, you will end up with extension cords draped across wet countertops—a massive safety hazard. Plan dedicated 15A sockets for the microwave and heavy appliances, and a cluster of 5A sockets in a designated "appliance garage" corner.

## Mistake 6: Approving a plan without an elevation

A plan drawing shows where cabinets sit on the floor. It cannot show that the tall unit will cover half the window, that the wall cabinet will clash with the chimney hood, or that the loft shutter will foul the ceiling beam. Every one of those has to be caught on an elevation drawing.

Insist on elevations of all walls before manufacturing. It costs the contractor an hour and saves you a cabinet that has to be remade.

## Mistake 7: Leaving the corner blind

A 900mm blind corner holds 4 to 6 cubic feet of space whose back is beyond arm's reach. You paid for that carcass, that shutter, and that hinge — and you will use roughly 60% of it. A carousel at ₹7,000 recovers most of the volume; a magic corner at ₹16,000–₹28,000 recovers nearly all of it.

The trap is that corner mechanisms need specific carcass widths. Decide at drawing stage, or retrofitting means replacing the cabinet. See the [L-shaped kitchen guide](https://www.alcorone.com/blog/l-shaped-modular-kitchen-cost-hyderabad/) for the options compared.

## Mistake 8: Manual edge banding

This is the most common long-term failure in Hyderabad kitchens and the hardest to spot at handover. Laminate and acrylic sheets are flat — they do not wrap around a shutter's edge. The edge must be sealed with PVC banding.

Applied by hand with contact adhesive, the band looks fine for a year, then lifts at the corners, collects grime, and shows a dark glue line. Applied by an industrial hot-melt or PUR machine, it stays sealed for the life of the kitchen. Ask which machine is used, and put the answer in the quotation.

## Mistake 9: Accepting a lump-sum quotation

"Modular kitchen — 120 sq ft — ₹2,80,000" gives you no way to compare vendors and no contractual protection when a ₹4,200 drawer system arrives as a ₹900 telescopic channel. Every legitimate quotation is a bill of quantities naming grade, brand, and IS standard per line.

Work through the [contractor checklist](https://www.alcorone.com/blog/modular-kitchen-contractor-checklist-hyderabad/) before signing, and see the [2026 cost guide](https://www.alcorone.com/blog/modular-kitchen-cost-hyderabad/) for what honest BOQ lines look like.

## Mistake 10: Skipping the loft

Hyderabad apartment kitchens are typically 10 to 11 feet tall. A standard modular kitchen stops at 7 feet, leaving 3 to 4 feet of prime volume above the wall cabinets across every wall — 25 to 35 cubic feet, available for about ₹18,000.

It is the cheapest storage in the house and the most frequently omitted. Specify lift-up shutters rather than side-hinged doors so the loft is actually usable, and put genuinely seasonal items there.

## Which of these can still be fixed

| Mistake | Fixable later? | Cost to correct |
|---|---|---|
| Work triangle / layout | No | Full rebuild |
| Shelves instead of drawers | Partly | ₹4,000–₹7,000 per unit |
| Wrong sink cabinet material | No | Countertop must come off |
| Insufficient lighting | Yes | ₹4,000–₹9,000 |
| Missing appliance points | Painful | ₹12,000–₹30,000, dado reopened |
| No elevation approved | No | Remake affected units |
| Blind corner | Only if width is right | ₹7,000–₹28,000 |
| Manual edge banding | No | Replace shutters |
| Lump-sum quotation | No | Unquantifiable |
| Skipped loft | Yes | ₹18,000–₹25,000 |

Five of the ten cannot be undone without dismantling finished work. Those five — layout, sink cabinet material, elevation approval, edge banding, and quotation detail — are the ones to get right before any money changes hands. ## Frequently asked *questions.*

### What is the ideal height for a kitchen counter in India?

The standard height is 850 mm (about 33.5 inches) from the floor. However, this should be adjusted based on the primary cook's height. If the primary cook is taller, the counter can be raised to 900 mm to prevent back pain.

### Should the refrigerator be inside or outside the kitchen?

If space permits, keeping the fridge inside the kitchen at the edge of the work zone is ideal. This allows family members to grab a drink without crossing the cook's path, while keeping ingredients close at hand.

### Is an open kitchen a bad idea for Indian cooking?

Indian cooking involves heavy frying and strong spices. If you want an open kitchen, you must invest in a high-suction chimney (minimum 1200 m3/hr) and ensure excellent cross-ventilation to prevent the whole house from smelling like tadka.

A kitchen is a machine for cooking. If the gears (the layout, lighting, and storage) don't align perfectly, the machine breaks down, making daily chores frustrating and tiring.

AlcorOne specializes in high-performance modular kitchens. We prioritize ergonomic drawer layouts, waterproof sink units, and perfectly placed task lighting to create a kitchen that works as beautifully as it looks.
